What's in the News?

I'm gonna read some news. Let's see what is going on in the world, shall we?

Well Jobless claims have reached a 16 year high. Way to go America! Actually it is very serious because unemployment only goes for so long. So after you lose your job you get to be poor and then if you still can't find work you get to be homeless. Nice country we have here that puts people on the street for just being poor.

At least the holiday shopping season is about to start because this way we can celebrate unchecked consumerism. The news media can avoid reporting on the state of people who don't have enough food and such and stick to reporting on the new Tickle Me Elmo or the scarcity of the Nintendo Wii.

Oh, I love this one, check out this picture.

In this image from NASA TV, a tool kit bag, center, as seen through the helmet camera of astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, floats away from the International Space Station after she lost hold of it during a procedure during a 6 1/2-hour scheduled space walk outside the space station, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008.(AP Photo/NASA TV)

Fucking excellent.

100 Grand just floating away because someone didn't use a piece of rope. The just shows the whole space program in a nutshell. I am all for the space program. I just think that there is a lot of stuff done wrong. I like the shuttle but it seems a little over blown. We need a more workman like shuttle program. Everything doesn't have to look pretty but it should work. I also think that they need to get some sponsors up on that stuff. If it can work for Nascar, why can't we put stickers on the shuttle? Patches on the spacesuits? The big fuel tank on the launch pad should be decorated to look like a giant can of Diet Pepsi. I say let big business put up a little cash.

I also think they need to sell some rides on the space shuttle. Why just astronauts? How about some millionaires? They would pay for the ride. Or maybe hold a national lottery. You put in a buck and if you win you get to go into space. How many millions could they raise and what would it cost them? A seat? Come on, it's not that difficult to train someone to go into space. I think all that astronaut training is if you need to fix shit or drive the shuttle. Learning to use the toilet and a few other things can't take much longer than a week or two. I would put in a few bucks what the hell?

Ok, here is one good one. A girl went four months without a heart. She had a transplant, the heart wasn't good. Then when there was no heart available the doctors put artifical pumps in her to keep her alive. She had to be attached to a photocopier sized machine to keep it pumping. Then she got a new heart. But for all that time in between, nothing.

Now that is kind of cool. Imagine what it would be like not having a heart beat. I am sure the machines were loud enough but not having the heart beating must have been strange as hell. Usually the only time your heart doesn't beat is right at the end. And usually you have other things on your mind if you are aware of it.

I have wished I wasn't breathing before. But that was when I sick and it hurt to breathe because I had a headache or flu or whatever. Oh, and that one time my nose was whistling and no matter how many times I blew it I had that damn whistle up in there. It damn near drove me insane. At that time I was wishing that I could stop breathing. But then I snorted some nose spray or whatever and all was better. Yay for happy endings.

Ha, Ha! Some assclown at Taco Bell is getting the company sued because they sent a fake letter to 50 Cent (or Fiddy as we say in the hood) to ask him to change his name for a day to 79 Cent, 89 Cent, or 99 Cent to promote the dollar menu. They offered to give $10K to Fiddy's favorite charity. Apparently Fiddy's lawyers figure they can make more with a little green-mail. They filed a lawsuit for trademark infringement. Fiddy must like El Polio Loco or Del Taco. I bet that they get a bit more than 10 grand in the end. Go Fiddy! Get your money! Lawsuits! The better than crime to make money.

Now the hippies are after video game machines. They are saying that the Xbox and the PS3 and to a lesser extent the Wii use a lot of electricity even if they are off. So they want you to turn off your systems when not in use. I really don't have a problem with that. I think that you should turn shit off. It's like people leaving their computers on 24/7. Why? I say turn the damn thing off if it is not being used. It doesn't help that some of the machines make is so hard to turn off. You have to shut down this and wait for that and dock this and its just takes so long. Turning something off should be easy. Hit the off switch and it is off. Is that so damn difficult? Why do things have to be so hard?

Now a new feature--Biff's Awesome Christmas gifts. I almost said "holiday" but fuck that. I celebrate Christmas. And sometimes Xmas. But hell, if you get me a present I will celebrate whatever you want me too. Our first one is the Obama Commemorative Plate. That needs to go on toilet lids or curio cabinets across the nation! Laterzzz...

Random Rambling

I don't remember if I had mentioned that I got a new computer. I got it at Xmas-time and it seems to be going good so far.

Knock on wood.

Knock on wood. I wonder where that comes from? I guess I could Google it.

There isn't much that can't be found with a Google search and a little bit of time. It is the preferred search engine for me. I like Yahoo, but it doesn't always come up with what I am looking for. MSN Live Search or whatever the hell it is called mostly sucks. The display is usually unusable. Google is nice and simple to navigate. At least the search part is. All that other Google shit sometimes becomes a bit tedious.

Then there are the other search engines out there that most people haven't even heard of. I can think of Alta Vista, does that still exist? Lemme check. Yeah, it does. And still looks like it sucks. Then there is Metacrawler and Lycos and Ask dot com. Those are just the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. I bet there are more, probably a whole bunch more. Not that it really matters. I am sure eventually they will go away, or just be echos of their former selves if they are not already.

It's funny. I guess you could say that I have been online for a while. Maybe a decade? Maybe less, I don't know. I know that there are things that have changed. Things are definitely more visual. With broadband speeds, video and audio are taking center stage.Photos and the written word just are not as important to convey the message. Let's face it, for most sites its a lot easier just to post a stupid video than having to come up with witty things to say. Just look at this one. I very rarely come up with anything witty to say.

Not that I care one way or the other. OK. I care. A little. Not much. Don't tell anyone. Or tell every one. I don't care.Don't you love circular arguments?

Pause

Took a little bit of a pause there. I had to go and do laundry, take out some garbage, eat, and play with myself. Well, I didn't play with myself but I could have! And I wouldn't even have had to pay for any porn. It is amazing how much free porn is online. It is almost impossible to avoid. Not that I do avoid it.

But honestly, porn is like tool. Unless I am going to use it for something I don't see the point in keeping it around. Don't get me wrong, boobies are great, but after awhile, I gets a little bored. Maybe bored isn't the right word. It's like when a famous person is in playboy. You take a look and check it out. Then its like, OK, now what? They nekkid, been there, seen that, let's see some boobies that I ain't seen before. Sad but true.

I guess Obama won South Carolina in the primary. Indiana has yet to be made offical. Some poeple are saying that Hillary ought to get out of the race. I don't know. I guess if you put in that much effort you are going to stay in it ot the end and if you can't win a chance to go for the big job you want to make sure that you at least come out better than you went in. Would Hillary take a job in Obama's White House? Or would she stay in the Senate and consolidate power there? I think she would stay in the Senate. I can't see Hillary being Vice President. It just doesn't fit. I think that Edwards might be Obama's Vice President. It might help balance the ticket. Let's see what happens. I don't think Hillery is getting the nomination though. I just don't see it right now. I can't see Obama giving up and with his mojo working I think he has the populace enthralled. But hey, McCain could still whip his ass when all those people get into the voting booth and think that they just ain't ready for President of the United States of America Barak Obama and all that that entails.

Check out the movie Iron Man. Good flick. I watched it online. Yeah, I know that it is still in the theater but the 'net is a whole big world and if someone sneaks a camera into a movie theater and takes a pretty good video of the movie and then it is posted on the internet... Is is wrong of me to watch it? I mean, can you consider it piracy if I don't pay anything for it? It's not like I bought a DVD on the street. I think that links directly into piracy because you are paying for a product. I just clicked a link. I wouldn't pay for something like that not because I am scared of the law, I just don't pay if it isn't quality. If I am going to pay for a movie I want to see it on the big screen or have a DVD with all the bells and whistles.

But not Blu-ray. I am not upgrading my DVD player until I have to. The same goes with my TV. Fuck HDTV. If I want to see a fucking image of a blade of grass that looks like a real blade of grass I will go outside and look at a fucking blade of grass. I don't think it matters how good the picture looks if what is on the screen is still the same old boring shit that was there before. Besides, I don't feel like buying Star Wars yet again.

That's it for now. Laterzzz...

Thinking about the election...

I guess the big topic of conversation on everyone's tongue is politics. Who is going to win what and when? Today is the Florida primary. I guess it is important on some level. I mean this is an exercise in democracy. People voting and choosing who they want to lead their country. It is the foundation of America.

And then you watch the speeches and the interviews with the people in the campaign, they talk all about the promise of this country. It really can be inspiring. Seeing the looks on the supporters faces, at least the ones for Obama and to a lesser extent, Clinton, you almost see a religious fervor in their eyes. That almost always makes me a little worried. Support for a candidate and their policies is alright but a fanatical support is a little bit scary. Sometimes more than a little bit.

If I could believe that voting for one person or another would change the world, would make me healthier, wealthier, and wiser, I would whole-heartedly throw my support toward that candidate. The only problem is the realist in me has a feeling that very little is going to change. I mean, what can one person do as President?

The opposite party and the forces of the status quo will do as much as possible to stop any progress. The days when a man like FDR could institute policies that changed the world is over. Big business has too much of a hold on this country. International globalism would overrule any significant economic change. This country is going to spiral deeper and deeper into a county of the super-haves and a population of have nots. All the while the foreign powers who own our debt will grow more and more powerful.

I mean look at this country. Historically our power has come from our independence. We didn't have to depend on other countries for our food and manufacturing. We didn't beat the Nazis and the Japanese because our soldiers were that much superior. We beat them because we could put more tanks and planes and ships in the battlefield. Our manufacturing base was never threatened.

We out lasted the Soviet Union because we could feed our own people. We could make cars and bombs and tanks and the world would have rather had a Timex watch on their wrist than any immitation Soviet item. How can you rule the world when your people have to wait in line for toilet paper?

Now we come to the new age. The only thing that is made in America is debt. Our food is grown around the world because we are planting corn to put in the gas tank. Our ravenous need for oil sends billions of dollars to countries that have a stone-age mentality and who hate us. While our need to buy and consume have us sending the rest of our money to a country run by an oppressive government with an inferiority complex that is more worried about saving "face" then about the rights of their own people or about the health of the people buying or making their products.

And here we are in America, where the American dream was born, what are we becoming? Or maybe the better question is what have we become? Do you feel safe? Do you feel secure? If you lost you job, what would you do? How could you live?

On a national scale, what would happen if we pissed off China? What if they decided not to send us our TV's and cell phones and fabrics all the other stuff that fills up our Wal-Marts? What if the Middle East erupts into violence and all the oil pipelines are cut? How do we wage a war with no gasoline? How do you heat a house in the middle of a blizzard with no oil? Do we start breaking furniture and throwing it into the fireplace? Are we prepared for any of this? We always joke about things going wrong but what happens if the all mighty Stock Markets collapse and all that money that exists only on paper disappears?

Now, I don't know if any of the shit could or would happen. I mean if China cuts us off, or goes to war, how would they pay for it? Business is usually more profitable then war. The Middle East? Well, let's put it this way. These people have hated each other forever. But if the flow of oil stops, so does the flow of money into their country. What does that leave? A bunch of guys sitting in the desert with guns and nothing else to do but kill each other. The oil money and their hatred of the West distracts the masses from the ineptitude of their leaders.

I must be honest, it is easy to be pessimistic. It is hard to think that you can change things and make it better. Maybe that is the hope of the Election season. Maybe we feel that if we can get behind the right person we can move forward as a group; start a new movement towards a brighter day. Or if you are a conservative, make a move back towards a traditional set of values or a time when things where better.

Though to be fair even the nature of conservatism has changed. Most conservatives really wouldn't want to go back to the subservient wife, the oppressed minorities, and the limiting of civil liberties. At least I hope that is the case. And progressives, or to use the dreaded term liberals, I think they know that the ideas of enforcing change through government means leads to disaster such as a welfare state or a bureaucracy that is even larger and more immobile than we have now.

So what is the answer? Is there one? Is this election going to be the start of a brand new day, a continuation of the status quo, or the beginning of the end? Isn't that the question you should be asking when you go into the voting booth? Is this person just the person that I like the best or is voting for this person the best thing for America? And here is one last question, is putting your faith in a person to change the world the right thing to do if that person not yourself?

Laterz...
