Random--nothing to see here.

Software updates. Always makes me a bit nervous. But this was just a quick Firefox one so it wasn't that bad. Not like when the update is by our friends from Microsoft or Adobe. That makes me worried. I need to update my Flash.

It's not that I think the update people don't know what they are doing. Shit, I think they are smart people. Smarter than me. Or at least better trained. I just think that maybe, just maybe, when they are sitting up there, over there, where ever, they forget that things in the real world fuck up a lot.

Murphy's Law says if something can go wrong it will. I would like to update that. My law would say: Shit has gone wrong. Shit is going wrong now. Shit is going to always be wrong. You should prepare right from the start to shovel, fix, and manage all the shit that is going to be wrong.

OK. Maybe I am over stating things. Then again maybe I am not. Have you been on the Bay Bridge? No. Well it was shut down for a bit because a cable snapped. That is not really that big of a deal. Things do break. The problem is, if you look around you, everything is right on the verge of breaking down. Nothing is made to last.

I don't know if this is just because that is the nature of us as humans or if it is purely part of the American mind set. I honestly think that in the recent development. We became a country where it is easier to throw something away than it is to get it fixed. Fixing things became passe'. It is all about the new, the now, the "what's next".

Damn.

I lost the track of this fucking entry. I don't know what I am trying to say. I think I might have to quit this fucking entry and start on a new one.

You know what happened. I've started caring about what I write. I used to just write and not give a shit how profane or stupid or clueless it was. I used to say what the fuck was on my mind and just let the shit go. Now, I am giving a shit what no one thinks.

Because I have have no illusions that anyone is reading this. Expecting someone to read something that you have written seems to me to be a type of vanity. Would it be cool if someone came and enjoyed what I said? Sure why the fuck not. On the other side of that, then I would have to perform for them. I would have to say something interesting. I would have to put up with someone else's ideas about my ideas. As it is now my ideas are my own. I like that.

I need some food. I had a cup of coffee and a boloney sammich. I can't decide if I should have tacos or a fried eggs sammich with cheese. I am leaning toward the egg sammich. Also another cup of coffee. Yeah. That seems right. That seems like it will hit the spot. Besides the taco shit isn't going anywhere and if I want it I will have it later. It is all about me. Fuck yeah! Laterzzz...

Halloween

Why Halloween?

Why dressing up? Why the giving out of candy? What is it all for?

Well, you could always go to Wikipedia and they would tell you Pagan this and harvest festival that. I don't believe that is the real reason.

The real reason that the kids should dress up and go out is because it is real. All of the ghosts and ghouls and goblins; the things that go bump in the night are real. The creepy crawlies that slither are real. All the beasties and the monsters in the closet are real.

In the past, in the long time ago time, evil things walked the Earth. While man huddled around the fires in the caves or huts the bad things walked the night. If you stepped too far outside of the light of campfire, there was a very real chance that the bad things would get you. Especially the small children.

Children taste the best. They are sweet where adults are bitter. They are crisp while grown ups are soggy. The make the creatures from the dark side salivate just at the thought of their deliciousness.

So the the evil would stalk man. Man was easy prey in the before times. Some of the creatures would approach the caves of man and whisper things to the small children or the foolish person. They would promise delicious goodies or gold and jewels. If you left the protection of your home they would pounce! But then man discovered magic.

The shaman and the witch doctors and the wise women would cast spells to keep the creatures away. They would have the people dress up in costumes and do magics to confuse the dark forces into thinking the humans were not food but creatures like themselves. They would leave sacrifices and offerings of honey and berries near the openings of the caves and the huts and houses, eventually, so that if any thing evil came calling it would find the goodies instead of the children that were inside.

So it went through history. As man grew stronger, and took dominion over the world, and brought forth technologies and sources of light the old ones where either destroyed or they went back to the dark places. They slipped into the realm of the creatures or spirits or evil ones, and they became trapped. The stronger man and his world became the more their world became a trap that they couldn't escape.

Oh, every now and then some creature may escape or there may be a haunted house, or a possession--but nothing like the old times. Except once a year. Just like a pressure cooker must let off steam or a dam must let water flow, once a year the veil between what was, and what is becomes thin. On Halloween the dark ones are free to walk the earth.

That doesn't explain why in this modern day and age we still dress up, and why we hand out candy, and why we put up strange decorations. Over the years we have lost our connection to those old times when we knew that evil was real. When evil was faced down and fought with masks and the bones and the rituals; or have we?

When the creatures slip from their world into ours, hungry for souls and flesh, especially of the young, what do they see? They see a world full of creatures like them. The magic of the masks cloud the simple minds of the hungry creatures. When the ghouls and spirits creep to the doors of a houses looking to find a sweet young morsel on which to feed, they become caught up in the mantra of "Trick or Treat!" and are given candy and sweets. They get caught up in the revelry, confused by the decorations and fed by offerings freely given.

We may not realize what we do and of course not every one participates but collectively we are keeping the creepy and the crawly and the bad things at bay. A connection back to the past when what we believed and what we knew were not so easy to separate.

So get some candy, put on a costume, and have a happy Halloween. And if that trick or treater at your door looks to have a costume a little too life-like just give him some extra candy, and wish them a Happy Halloween because the magic is still working.

F'n Info

A screwdriver pressed to the base of the skull. One hand pulls back the forehead while the other hand pushes the screwdriver up and forward driving the exposed steel into the brain until the handle meets skin.

An old children's slide. Shiny, metal, gleaming in the sun. A person slides down. Halfway down the slide is covered in razor blades which slice into the skin. At the bottom of the slide is a pool of vinegar for the slider to come to rest in.

Walking barefoot across a ground covered in jagged broken glass and poison ivy. Tripping and falling face first not into a bed of nails but onto a bed of needles.

I could go on. But I won't. I was just thinking of reasons I could say why I haven't been writing. The previous three were more interesting than any real reasons I could come up with. I just have not been able to feel that motivated. Not even motivated to write about nothing--which I used to be able to do and which this here entry seems to be about to morph into.

It is fall. Yay? I mean summer is over and the days are getting less full of daylight. I would say they are getting shorter but that is not true. I believe the days are actually getting longer as the the Earth's spinning slows down. I don't know how much, I thought I heard like a second every 4 years. I don't really care enough to Google it.

I am tired of Googling things. All that knowledge right at your fingertips gets a little boring. Back in the day you had to make shit up or actually have your facts straight. As a kid you had to go to the library or look up facts in an old encyclopedia that still listed Jimmy Carter as President of the United States. Not anymore. Any information you want is right there online. Some of it is actually even accurate. That is probably the worst part. The fact that a lot of it is right. Laterzzz...
