Legalize
The government should legalize marijuana.
Not because it is stupid to make something illegal that you can grow in your closet. Not because of the right or perceived wrong of the use. Not for medical reasons.
It should be made legal so that we can tax the shit out of it. If drugs were legal the government could help pay for the fuck up that the Bush administration has done to every part of our country. It would also save a lot of money by helping to get rid of all the money spent on putting people in jail. The legal system would be way less burdened and maybe police could spend more time on catching real criminals.
It's not going to happen though. Why? It is because of the money. All the people that make money off the so-called war of drugs. Think about it.
If pot was legal, less people would need lawyers. Less people would probably drink alcohol. Less prisons would be needed. Who would have to go to their doctors to get anxiety medications if a person could just take a few tokes? We wouldn't need as many DEA agents. We wouldn't need as many police.
It's not going to happen though. There are too many forces aligned against it. Too much money made by the corporations and groups that make their money off of it being prohibited. It is way to easy for politicians to be against "drugs" then it is for them to stand up and have the balls to be against the prohibition that is currently in place.
On a darker note, the drug war is also a means of control and monitoring of certain segments of the population that our government inherently distrusts, be that because of age, skin tone, income level, or political ideology. It is also a great conditioning tool. If you tell everyone that something they know to be OK is wrong and make it illegal and yet they do it anyway they have already broken the law . And if a person breaks the law, they assume that everyone else is too and when they find out that their government is full of liars and cheats who also break the law it is hard to take the moral high ground when inside they feel that they have lied and broken the law also. But I might be reaching on that point. But then again maybe not.
After-all, we associate in this country the law with some kind of morality. Don't kill. Killing is wrong therefore killing is illegal. Don't steal. Stealing is wrong therefore illegal. Don't smoke weed. Smoking weed is illegal, but is it wrong? Can you really put someone smoking a plant on the same level morally as killing, raping, or stealing? Should you give up your precious life rotting in jail because some guy in a suit who is drinking, smoking, and popping pills, says it's wrong? That just doesn't make much sense to me.
I believe in right and wrong. I think the war against marijuana is wrong. I say make it legal. Tax it. Sell it in stores and make people show ID to buy it. Take the money saved and pay off the national debt or maybe give poor people health care and homes. But it isn't going to happen. Not now. Not in America. Because it is wrong. Laterzzz...
